Our Girl Scouts are our future leaders and clubwomen, and we are proud to support them in every way we can. This year, we are honored to support Portia Landon and her Gold Award project. Members of Roswell Cares recently met with Portia to learn more about her vision for Melodies for Memories, and we were delighted to help her create a dedicated website for this meaningful initiative.
Melodies for Memories supports older adults living with dementia or experiencing early signs of memory loss by harnessing the power of music. The program is a Memory Choir—a joyful, safe, and supportive space where seniors sing familiar songs that spark memories, brighten mood, and build connection. Music activates multiple areas of the brain at once, stimulates emotional centers, strengthens neural communication, and helps release dopamine—a neurotransmitter that is often reduced in individuals with dementia.

About Portia:
Portia was born and raised in Burbank, California, where she spent the first decade of her life before moving to Holly Springs, Georgia. She has been a Girl Scout for 11 years, beginning in Pre-Kindergarten, and is a proud Bronze and Silver Award recipient who is now completing her Gold Award project. Throughout her Girl Scout career, Portia has sold over 23,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and has dedicated more than 600 hours to community service.
In high school, Portia’s favorite subject is Advanced Placement Biology, which played a significant role in inspiring her Gold Award project. Her interest in how the brain functions, combined with her love of music, led her to create a memory choir that supports seniors experiencing dementia or memory loss. This project reflects her passion for science, service, and meaningful community impact.
Portia is deeply proud of the work she has accomplished through her Gold Award project, which represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouts and recognizes a girl’s ability to identify an issue she is passionate about, take sustainable action, and create lasting impact in her community. Through this project, she has demonstrated leadership, initiative, and a strong commitment to making a difference.
